WHAT WOULD YOU DO
Fellow bloggers,
As I sit here and contemplate
all we have experienced over the past nine weeks, it's amazing how much
information can go into one class. When we started this class early in the year
2023, I was working as an OSHA training instructor and now I sit here as a
Government Civilian back working on the base. What does that mean? Well, it was an opportunity
to evaluate many of the HR concepts we have discussed in this class. Below you
will find three of my biggest programs and a little about how they need to be
pushed to the front.
On-Boarding- I was working in this exact same position just over
a year ago. The hiring manager pushed the topic of a Turn-Key hire. Well, with
me, that’s precisely what they got. However, had I not been a turn-key hire, the
onboarding process for not only the Civilian Side but that of the office was
not one to write home about. There was zero done in the office in preparation for
my arrival. The office was equipped with boxes and random items tucked away for
storage over the previous few months. If that turn-key feature wasn’t in place, I would have been lost, I would have felt disconnected, in addition, the
confusion about duties and meetings would have been
A second but no less critical concept is the Candidate assessment
process. I agree that I was the best applicant for this position, but having the
ability to see and hear how the process was applied made me feel even better.
This position had 14 applicants. Of those 14 applicants, only 4 have Air
Force Safety Experience. From there, as stated, they wanted to turn the key. Three
interviews were conducted and I presented as the most likely to walk into the
office and be able to work day 1. It was an excellent selection process and the
ability to get from 14 to 4 was excellent.
The Final concept comes from a recent article that I
recently read dealing with the processing analytics in the follow-up program. The
concept here is feedback from the top down. If we are hiring as well as onboarding, we need to be able to measure our successes. We do that by calculating
our ROI. As a turn-key employee on day one, I was having an impact. However, that’s
not always the case. Some employees take more work to get up to speed, and sometimes
they never will. It is through data analysis and constant feedback that we can determine
where our weak points are and how we can improve the process going forward.
Its been a great experience learning about these different concepts, and I genuinely look forward to applying them as the days go by.
